IF you think that Perth to Newcastle is a long trip by air, spare a thought for the eight Hunter men who have been cycling the 4200-kilometre distance in the name of research.

Today the team will be welcomed home by the two organisations it is supporting, the Hunter Medical Research Institute (HMRI) and the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service, at John Hunter Hospital.

Members of the team, Alan Moyle, Ross Hayter, Martin Parker, Phil Stewart, Gary Brown, Tony Farnham, Maurie Doughan and Daniel Doyle, will coast into the grounds of the Rankin Park Campus about midday.

During the past four weeks, the lads have raised $40,000 and cycled an average 175 kilometres daily (pictured).

While all are experienced cyclists, this is their biggest trip to date.

"We have endured challenging terrain, tough weather and a few bumps and bruises, but it's all been worth it in support of two great Hunter charities," said team captain Alan Moyle.
